I once read a quote from the most decorated marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya that has changed how I approach all my life goals and daily habits. Eliud said, “Remember, only the disciplined ones are free in life. If you are undisciplined, you are a slave to your moods. You are a slave to your passions. That’s a fact.”
I’ve approached each month of this year by breaking down my goals into digestible weeks and days. For example, I have a note card that has Trust God and 1% better each day on the front; then, on the back, I list the daily habits needed to achieve my monthly goal. I won’t go deep into my aspirations but let’s break down one of my monthly goals together.
Let’s say I want to be the top Sales rep at my job. It’s not enough to just wish and pray this goal into existence – I must develop the discipline and habits to promulgate being the best. I first start by looking at the quota that my manager sets, which is four sales a month. Then I break it down into the following deliverables:
- Call 25 prospects per day/ 125 calls a week.
- Multiply my sales goal by two, which gives me eight meetings booked by the end of the month, giving me enough room to hit and exceed my quota.
- Celebrating myself for each meeting/sale booked, but not getting comfortable with past wins.
- Lastly, I setup up time to learn from the top performers and practice my pitch with them daily.
I truly believe that excellence is having the discipline to do the little task correctly over and over. No goal or anything in life is unachievable if you reverse engineer your big hairy audacious goals into bite-size pieces. Additionally, don’t give up or give in when you don’t see the results immediately; anything outstanding or worth having will cost you a tremendous amount of grit, perseverance, failure, and strong self-belief.
